Specimen Label. Unusual within the genus for its distribution – it is the only species found in the eastern United States – and its polymorphic workers. The minor worker of badius , which is the dominant subcaste, can readily be distinguished from the worker of all other species of North American Pogonomyrmex by the head shape, which is rather strongly narrowed posteriorly in full-face view, the conformation of the scape base, and the small eyes which are placed distinctly beneath the middle of the sides of the head. The major workers, as well as the intermediates, are defined nicely by their disproportionately enlarged heads. Moreover, there is an accentuation of feminine traits in the thorax of the intermediates and especially of the majors, the sclerites being well delimited and bearing a striking resemblance to those of the female caste. The species which is most likely to be confused with badius in the worker caste is Pogonomyrmex comanche. The configuration of the petiole and post petiole is quite similar in the two, and both species have the nodes rather coarsely and generally transversely rugose. But whereas the dorsum of the petiolar node of comanche , seen in lateral view, is flattened and usually bears a distinct median depression, that of badius is convex and not depressed. Both species have a strongly arched thorax; but comanche possesses perfectly normal epinotal spines whereas badius has an unarmed epinotum under normal conditions, though it may occasionally have aberrant epinotal spination vide infra.

From Wikipedia the free encyclopedia. The Kow Swamp archaeological site comprises a series of late Pleistocene burials within the lunette of the eastern rim of a former lake known as Kow Swamp. The site is significant for archaeological excavations by Alan Thorne between and which recovered the partial skeletal remains of more than 22 individuals.
The name of Kow Swamp is derived from an Aboriginal word in the Yorta Yorta language , Ghow , which refers to the white gypsum soil found in the area. Kow Swamp is now a permanent water body, due to its use for irrigation storage, 15 kilometres in circumference, with an average depth of 3 metres. Originally a low lying swamp, it was filled when the Murray River is in flood or running at high levels, while Bendigo creek provides a smaller amount of water.
There is evidence of recent Aboriginal occupation of the area from canoe trees and middens, while early settlers’ records describe an Aboriginal ceremonial site on the north side of the swamp. The most notable evidence was the discovery in , on the west side of the swamp, of the Cohuna Cranium by a local earthmoving contractor. The editor of the local newspaper Cohuna Farmers Weekly notified authorities and the significance of the discovery was realised.
In the s, Alan Thorne also identified archaic bone from the collection at the Museum of Victoria, and traced the find spot to Kow Swamp. Archaeological excavations were undertaken between and by Thorne for the Australian National University in Canberra. Further remains were found around the swamp by an interested local resident, Gordon Spark. By the remains of at least forty individuals had been excavated and studied.

Archaeological sites belonging to the Nubian Complex Fig. Numerical ages from Nubian Complex sites Table 1 are constrained within Marine Isotope Stage 5 MIS 5 , although temporal differences have been observed among assemblages; as such, it is divided into two phases, an early and a late Nubian Complex , .
The primary working surface of a Nubian Type 1 core is formed by two distal-divergent removals creating a steeply angled median distal ridge, in order to set up the core for the preferential removal of an elongated and pointed flake or blade. Although the end product is the same, the steep median distal ridge on a Nubian Type 2 core is achieved through bilateral shaping of the primary working surface.
These two methods are not mutually exclusive; in some instances, the primary working surface of the Nubian core exhibits a combination of partial-distal and lateral shaping. In every case, Nubian cores have highly characteristic preparation at the distal end of the core to create a steeply peaked triangular cross-section, which results in the signature Nubian Levallois point , . Nubian Levallois core preparation strategy is technologically dissimilar to the Levallois point-producing industries found at nearby Levantine Middle Palaeolithic MP sites, which are broadly characterized by preferential unidirectional-convergent and centripetal reduction systems — .
The early Nubian Complex is distinguished by a higher frequency of Nubian Type 2 cores in conjunction with bifacial foliates and handaxes , . The late Nubian Complex, on the other hand, shows a predominance of Nubian Type 1 cores and a complete absence of bifacial reduction .

Ionising radiation can be described as the transfer of energy in the form of particles such as alpha and beta particles or electromagnetic waves such as X-rays and gamma rays of a wavelength of nanometres or less or a frequency of 3 x hertz or more capable of producing ions directly or indirectly. Ionising radiation can occur naturally e. Ionising radiation has many uses in industry, such as energy production, manufacturing, medicine and research and produces many benefits to society.
However, ionising radiation attacks the cells of the body by producing chemical changes in the cell DNA, leading to abnormal cell growth, therefore it is important that exposures are managed sensibly to protect workers.

Due to significant advances in Palaeolithic research, a new Research and Conservation Framework document was published in for the Palaeolithic alone, in which it was noted that Mesolithic archaeology had developed a distinct agenda and set of requirements. Since , Mesolithic archaeology has indeed changed significantly: many important discoveries have been made and there has been increased interest in the period among both archaeologists and the public.
A new Mesolithic Framework was necessary in order to improve understanding of the period and guide future work. Accordingly this document outlines the current challenges facing the study of the Mesolithic, as well as the opportunities, and sets out a series of research themes and strategies to address these over-arching aims. Since the previous Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Framework document Prehistoric Society was produced numerous significant discoveries have been made and fresh perspectives have been developed for the British Mesolithic.
These include the discovery of a number of settlement sites with houses; the recognition of the potential of intertidal and offshore deposits following the mapping of submerged landscapes under the North Sea and elsewhere; renewed excavations at the flagship site of Star Carr which have highlighted alarming problems with drying out of the peat; and more detailed studies of the Mesolithic environment and landscape change including the creation and settlement of the British archipelago. However, the Mesolithic is arguably still the most neglected period in British prehistory and as a consequence of its low profile and the need to assimilate new information and discoveries a project was commissioned by English Heritage to develop a new Mesolithic Research and Conservation Framework for England.
The aims of this Research and Conservation Framework are to: 1 improthe understanding of the Mesolithic of England; and 2 set out key issues and priorities for future work. This framework has been produced by undertaking broad-ranging consultation across the sector using a dedicated website to disseminate information, an on-line discussion forum to generate interactive debate, email correspondence, and a meeting of interested experts from across the sector.
The framework process has been composed of three parts, as set out by Olivier in Frameworks for our Past. The first part was a resource assessment: a statement of the current state of knowledge and a description of the archaeological resource; this will be archived with the Archaeology Data Service Blinkhorn and Milner a.

Optically-Stimulated Luminescence is a late Quaternary dating technique used to date the last time quartz sediment was exposed to light. As sediment is transported by wind, water, or ice, it is exposed to sunlight and zeroed of any previous luminescence signal. Once this sediment is deposited and subsequently buried, it is removed from light and is exposed to low levels of natural radiation in the surrounding sediment. Through geologic time, quartz minerals accumulate a luminescence signal as ionizing radiation excites electrons within parent nuclei in the crystal lattice.
Two optically stimulated luminescence age estimates from the open-air Funding for OSL dating comes from the Australian Research Council.
A dating method that measures the amount of light released when an object is heated. Thermoluminescence, or TL, has been used since the s to determine the approximated firing date of pottery and burnt silicate materials. TL has a wide dating range; it has been used to date ceramics from a few hundred years old to geologic formations that are half a million years old. The technique measures the small amount of energy that continually builds up in the mineral crystal lattice.
When heated, this energy is released as a burst of light. The intensity of the light is proportional to the amount of energy, which in turn corresponds to the length of accumulation time. Thus the time can be approximated for original original firing date. Recently new techniques optically stimulated luminescence dating using lasers and sensitive detectors have been used to improve the light detection.
Samples require about milligram and the sample collection and handling step is critical. The rate of energy accumulation depends on the amount of background radiation to which the object has been exposed. Thus, preliminary X-ray or gamma radiography examination of the object can increase the amount of accumulated energy and thus give erroneous dating result. Jump to: navigation , search.
